McLaren’s latest drop-top sports car has been revealed in the form of the all-new 570S Spider. Officially the third variant available for the 570S (after the Coupe and GT), the all-new Spider features the same performance attributes of its hardtop counterpart with the addition of a retractable roof.
“The McLaren 570S Spider is the most attainable McLaren Spider to date and adds yet another dimension to the McLaren Sports Series family. This is a convertible without compromise; its mid-engined layout and carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis guarantee the same thrilling dynamic performance and exceptional driver involvement enjoyed in a 570S Coupé, but with the added attraction of a retractable hard-top that delivers the extra exhilaration of roof-down motoring,” said Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren Automotive.
Its lightweight roof is electronically operated and can be stowed beneath a crafted tonneau cover. The roof can be deployed in 15 seconds at up to speeds of 40 km/h. A glazed wind deflector is also present and can be electrically raised or lowered with the roof up or down.
Both the Coupe and Spider versions of the 570S may look the same, but McLaren installed a taller spoiler for the new drop-top. It’s 12mm taller than the spoiler on the Coupe and provides additional downforce to compensate for the loss of the fixed roof. To further differentiate it from the rest of the lineup, all-new ten-spoke lightweight forged alloy wheels are available as an option on the 570S Spider. The front axle gets 19-inchers while the rear gets 20-inch wheels.
Inside, it gets hand-stitched leather on its seats, door panels, dashboard and center console. It also comes with the familiar 10-inch TFT instrument panel and centrally-mounted 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Six-way adjustable seats are equipped as standard while eight-way adjustable seats with memory function can be specified as an option. Also available as optional extras are the lightweight carbon fiber shelled sports seats derived from the McLaren P1 halo car.
Providing grunt for the 570S Spider is still the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 that punches out 570 PS at 7400 rpm along with 600 Nm of torque available between 5000 – 6500 rpm. It is then mated to a seven-speed sequential shift gearbox (SSG) that allows it to sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 328 km/h (315 km/h with the roof down).
It will be making its official public debut at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed which will run from June 29 – July 2. The first four hundred 570S Spiders will be launch edition models and first customer deliveries will commence in August.
